Fearless

On the second day of the new year, I had nothing to do and so I arranged to go to the movies with WL.

We wanted to watch 'Memories of the Geisha' (WAHAHA!) but there were no more tickets left. There was some from the first row of one screening but who wants to sit in the first row in the cinema... So uncomfortable!

In the end, we watched 'Fearless' by Jet Li. Second row seats.... 'Vast difference' but if not then do what? Go home meh?? Anyway got free tickets from WL so we just made do lah

I think many people went to watch Fearless because it is the last kungfu movie that Jet will ever make, english or chinese.... People are always sentimental.... when good things come to an end then they will remember and want to have it.... Just like the Kumar Boom Boom Room like that.... Or Mona Lisa Painting... but that is another story haha.

Fearless is about Huo YuanJia, a kungfu master in the turbulent late Qing Dynasty who stood up for the Chinese when foreigners were bullying and humiliating Chinese in China. He fought foreign fighting experts using HUO Kungfu style and beat all of them

Anyway, after I watched the movie I felt that it is only abit above average lah.... The story was not well developed at some parts, like the main character's path to self-discovery and renewal was brushed over very lightly..... The director chose to focus and emphasize on the action part of the movie (it being an action movie, duhz) But the themes were generally well presented, like bravery, patriotism, strength, family etc.....

The fighting was choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping (the master who did Matrix and KungFu and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon fighting scenes) His choreography always carries a fighting style that is asthetically beautiful (but impractical) and it has come to become his signature style.... When you watch the movie you will instantly recognise his choreography. There are really apparent marks of his floating style.... However, this time round, there was also quite a strong departure from his usual beautiful fighting.... I think that in order to bring out the brutal tone of the movie as well as to accomodate the real HUO Kungfu, he had to make adjustments.

When I watched the people fight in the movie I finally understood why it was NC16.... Bones were broken in front of our eyes and blood were splattered realistically. I think these images not very healthy for youngsters.... Later alot of people think fighting super cool den the police will have a hard time stopping fights in Singapore....

Finally Jet Li said he wanted to make non-Kungfu movies after Fearless. But I wanted to go point out to him that it will require him to really act..... Maybe somebody should gently break it to him that he cannot really act properly...

Whoever who definitely sincerely will go watch him in a non-Kungfu movie tell me.... I pay for your movie ticket.... Haha
